E-notify
Frequently Asked Questions
How
does it work?
Every
10 minutes E-notify checks your mailbox (provided
by your Internet Service Provider) for unread
E-mail matching your filter specifications.
When new mail is detected that passes your filters,
a notification is sent to your Stenocall pager.
If
you have an alpha pager, a text message of up
to 240 characters is sent (containing the sender,
optionally the subject, and optionally a portion
of the main body). If you have a numeric
pager, a 4-digit code number which you select
is sent to your pager.
What
information do I need to research before signing
up?
Once
you know your mailbox is POP3
compatible, the main things you need are your
mailbox name and password.
Sometimes,
you can simply put your exact E-mail address,
such as
, in this field. Try that first.
If
your E-mail address is different from your actual
account name with your Internet Service Provider
(ISP), then you probably need to substitute
your account name, such as
.
But
the above options don't always work, especially
with large nationwide ISPs. If they don't
work, you need to specify your actual account
name with your ISP, then an "@" sign,
then the name of your ISP's POP3 mail server.
Example: .
You
can obtain your account name and POP3 mail server
by looking at the configuration options in your
mail reader or, failing this, from your ISP.
Your
E-Mail password may be the same as your Internet
login password or it may be different. It
is the password used to connect to the mail server
to retrieve your mail. If you have forgotten
your password, you should be able to obtain it
from your ISP after proving your identity.
Is
it compatible with my mail?
POP3
(Post Office Protocol 3) is the name given to
the standard Internet method of holding your E-mail
in a mail server--a "post office"--for
later retrieval.
E-notify
can handle most POP3 mailboxes. Some E-mail
systems don't use the standard POP3 system.
These are mainly the online services, including
(according to our information) AOL, CompuServe,
and Classic Prodigy (as opposed to Prodigy Internet).
However, regular Internet Service Providers
(ISPs) should support the POP3 standard.
If you're not sure, call your provider.
Unfortunately,
at last report, AT&T Worldnet (and possibly
other ISPs we don't know about) has their POP3
mail server behind a firewall and won't allow
outside access, so we can't notify you of those
E-mails. Sorry.
Also,
as far as we know, the various free E-mail services
are browser-based and don't use the POP3 standard,
so we can't handle those either. If you're
not sure, just try it out--or ask the E-mail provider.
How
much does it cost?
Youe
E-notify service is just $1.99 per month, paid
on the same schedule and on the same bill as your
pager.
What
about non-Stenocall pagers?
Sorry,
we only handle Stenocall pagers.
